Enjoy your Tuesday, the sun is shining in Lugo at the moment, albeit briefly I'm sure.

Monday 24 February 2014

Good morning everyone! I hope you all had a great weekend...The coast was wonderful and it was nice to see my old friend the sunshine again.

We sent off our letters to New Zealand on Friday! I can't wait to get our responses and neither can the kids. I was very impressed by some of our students writing and not so impressed by certain others...

As you can guess this was written by one of the older ones (the part about being mentally 3 years old if not far from the truth though), pretty sure he has changed it though.

This week we are starting our carnival project, stay tuned for my surprise 'how to' you are going to love it!! The kids are already fighting over who is going to get to take it home!

Happy Monday

What plans do you all have for this weekend?

I hope to see a glimpse of the sun on the coast, I miss the sea so much and the light that you get from living on the coast as well.

Enjoy your Thursday!

Happy Tuesday!

Good morning everyone! People keep telling me the weather will improve but when??? I feel like I have been living under a grey cloud forever.

Yesterday we started our carnival theme, the kids seem pretty excited

"I want to be Princess Jasmine"

"No, I said that first"

"No, I did"

You get the gist...

Enjoy your day and tell me your stories too!

Sunday afternoon baking

So tomorrow we start our Valentine's week with lots of fun planned!

As well as making lovely cards for our mummies and daddies we are going to be decorating love heart cookies and men (the baked variety that is!)

The recipe is really simple and yummy!

Ingredients:

250g soft butter

320g plain flour sieved

125g sieved icing sugar

1 tablespooon of milk

1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

You will also need a mixing bowl (if you have an electric mixer this is far less messy!), cookie cutters, a rolling pin, a sieve and a baking try.

Step 1:

Mix all the dry ingredients either by hand in a mixing bowl or in the electric mixer, add the milk at the end and knead or mix to make a soft but not sticky dough.

Step 2:

Sprinkle a little flour on the work top and over the rolling pin, take a small part of the dough and roll it out to about 6mm thick.

Step 3:

Cut out the shapes with the cookie cutters, if the dough sticks to surface try using a metal spatula to pick up the shapes and put them on a lightly greased baking try (baking paper optional).

Note. Whilst one batch of cookies are baking you can keep rolling and cutting and put the shapes on a plate until the baking tray is free.

Try not to eat the freshly baked cookies straight away even though they are delicious like this!

Step 4:

Bake at 170C for 12 minutes the cookies will look white (ish) when they are ready. Use the metal spatula to pick them up and put them on a wired rack or something similar to cool down.

 Step 5 (optional):

Once the cookies have cooled you can decorate them or even better get the kids to decorate them like are doing next week!

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday and I'll keep you posted next week about our Valentine's mayhem!

As crooked as a dog's hind leg...

So our rather revealing discussions about honesty continued this week with some shocking revelations!

After reading a short text about cheating and copying in exams...

Me: So Alex did you cheat when you were at school?

Alex: Of course!

As if I asked "Is it raining today?"

"Of course!"

Or

Me: "You copy in your exams?"

"Yes"

Me: "But you're studying to be a vet, vas a matar los animales (you're going to kill the animals)!"

And this was just the start of our students dark secrets! My eyes have been opened up to a new level, clearly my life was even more sheltered than I thought!

I mean, if students in Spain put as much effort into actually studying for exams instead of spending that time thinking of ways to make 'chuletas' (notes on pieces of paper) they would probably pass legitimately!

Two stories in particular have now tarnished my innocence.

1. "My brother cheats in exams and at school all the time. The last time I saw him emptying the inside of a rubber so he could screw up a piece of paper with notes on and put it inside ready for his test!"

Surely he must have some level of intelligence to think of doing that in the first place!?

2. "When I was at school I remember the girls used to staple pieces of paper to the inside of their skirts and look at them during the exam."

This I thought might even work in the UK because let's face it, if a teacher complained about that method of cheating they would probably be the ones who ended up being punished.

Although after all these discussions what concerns me most is that their are now 'qualified' doctors, engineers, vets etc. that copied all through university and quite possibly don't know what they need to know. So be careful when you cross a bridge in Spain, you never know how qualified the engineer actually is!

Have a great weekend!

Good morning one and all, and a very happy Friday! We've had a busy week here, learning lots of English, as well as battling the elements of Galician weather! How windy it has been! We have a week to go until we reach St Valentine's Day, so we'll be continuing with activites throughout next week, as well as having lots of surprises and treats in store for you!  We've also started our letters to our new friends in New Zealand ..... which will be great fun. Have a FANTASTIC weekend, get some rest and be ready for an action packed week ahead ... HUGS xoxoxox

Tuesday 4 February 2014

Good morning everyone! I hope you have a fun filled day planned.

We had a good chat about honesty at Jordan English last night, some of us are more honesty than others (you know who you are)!

What is your opinion?

Imagine your mother spent ages knitting you a jumper but you think it is hideous, would you tell her or would you make up a little white lie?

Enjoy your day!
